England House 5584 is an imposing country house in the heart of a superb 1800 acre sporting estate only a little over an hour from London.
Each aspect of the house enjoys outstanding views be it down to the lake, to the 9 hole golf course or to the informally landscaped grounds all within the 450 acres of walled inner grounds.
It has a most impressive history - the site of a Saxon’s thane’s court; the Manor house of one of William the Conqueror’s barons; the seat of the DuCane family in the 18th century, rebuilt for them by Sir Robert Taylor, then one of the leading architects of the English country house. It is now the home of the Clark family, who, with great energy and imagination, have carefully modernized and redecorated the house and made it available for letting.
Not only do the views from each side of the house differ, but another of Sir Robert’s architectural devices was to build the house so that each facade was fascinatingly different. His octagonal windows are also unique in English architectural repertoire.
The interior is hugely spacious and comfortable with nine individual bedrooms each with a private bathroom, a pillard entrance hall/reception area, a splendid paneled dining room; a library/drawing room fully paneled in the style of Grindling Gibbons; a billiard room, a ballroom, and a beautiful indoor heated swimming pool.
It has a wealth of interesting furniture and sculpture and throughout the house the owner’s outstanding collection of modern English impressionists and other important paintings are featured.
Such an estate is rarely found so close to London, so if you can bear to tear yourself away from the estate which offers you: game shoots; a challenging 9 hole golf course; an indoor heated swimming pool and sauna; a hard tennis court; fishing on the lakes; croquet and billiards, you can reach the capital with ease. Riding, ballooning, and wind surfing can also be arranged close by. The estate is also close to the beautiful East Anglian Tudor wool towns of Long Melford, Lavenham, Clare and Cavendish; to Constable country and to the splendid University town of Cambridge.
Accommodations include on the Ground floor; a Pillared entrance Hall/reception room with comfortable sofas and chairs, a corner bar and huge family mural over an open fire. A Ballroom with superb Adam ceiling, a lovely room used for wedding, receptions, etc. Paneled library/drawing room, warm and spacious with numerous books, paintings and an open fire.
