Possibly the most spectacular castle in Ireland and has been the Irish home of the Dukes of Devonshire since 1748.
Situated in a panoramic position it overlooks the Blackwater Valley with views over rolling wooded hills to the Knockmealdown Mountains.
The castle was built in the 13th century by King John. Subsequent renovations took place in the early 17th century and in the 1840s. The entrance is on the edge of Lismore which is steeped in history and has been designated a Heritage Town.
There is a hard tennis court in the garden and salmon fishing can be arranged on the River Blackwater which is one of Ireland’s premier salmon rivers.
There is a nine-hole golf course on the estate and several good 18 hole courses in the area.
Riding and fox hunting (in season) can be arranged and there are race courses within easy reach.
The castle is ideal for parties of up to 23 and is often used for family reunions or small business meetings.
The staff prides itself on the level of service and cuisine which is exactly the same standard as when the Duke of Devonshire and his family are in residence.
